The Lord Lieutenant’s Falling Plate Competition History In 1854 Hythe was home to the School of Musketry, (now Small Arms School Corps), a branch of the Army formed to improve marksmanship following the introduction of the Rifle into military service. The foreshore at Hythe was established as the area we now know as Hythe Ranges in order to practice firing drills and teach marksmanship skills. The earliest targets were thick steel plates that would ring out when hit.  As the skill of the firers and the accuracy of the weapons improved the targets were reduced in size. The Lord Lieutenant’s Competition Historically for a soldier to qualify as a marksman; he was taught to load, aim and fire with accuracy and speed at the small metal target achieving a number of hits in a given time. In today’s Armed Forces we operate as a team of 4, called a Fire Team, and we have highly accurate and powerful rifles fitted with optical sighting systems. It is only fitting that the Lord Lieutenant’s Competition has evolved over the last 150 years, from one of the early tests of marksmanship to a fitting marksmanship competition designed to test the fire effectiveness of a Fire Team in the spirit of ages past. Overview The competition is for each member of the 4 person Fire Team to be issued 10 rounds of ammunition. On the command “GO!” they will adopt a prone position and fire at 10 small metal plates of 300 x 300 mm at a range of approximately 250 m. There will be 4 teams on the firing point all competing to win their round by knocking their allocated plates down the fastest and advancing to the next round. The winner is the fastest team in the final round. We anticipate over 30 teams competing from the Army, Cadets, Civilian Gun Clubs and possibly even the Police. Please come along to the Hythe Ranges Open day on Sun 3 Jul 2016 and cheer for your favourite team Gates are open to the public at 10 am and the competition will start at 11 am with prize giving planned for 3 pm. ALL Proceeds will be donated to the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers Charity [post_title] => Hythe Ranges Open Day [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => hythe-ranges-open-day-3 [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2017-08-21 10:31:01 [post_modified_gmt] => 2017-08-21 10:31:01 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://hythefestival.co.uk/?post_type=tribe_events&p=1835 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => tribe_events [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [EventStartDate] => 2018-07-08 10:00:00 [EventEndDate] => 2018-07-08 15:00:00 [Origin] => events-calendar [ShowMapLink] => 1 [ShowMap] => 1 [StartDate] => 2018-07-08 10:00:00 [EndDate] => 2018-07-08 15:00:00 [StartDateUTC] => 2018-07-08 10:00:00 [EndDateUTC] => 2018-07-08 15:00:00 [Duration] => 18000 [VenueID] => 202 [CurrencySymbol] => £ [CurrencyPosition] => prefix [URL] => [Timezone] => UTC+0 [TimezoneAbbr] => [Recurrence] => a:15:{s:4:"type";s:4:"None";s:8:"end-type";s:2:"On";s:3:"end";s:0:"";s:9:"end-count";s:1:"1";s:11:"custom-type";s:5:"Daily";s:15:"custom-interval";s:0:"";s:16:"custom-type-text";s:0:"";s:21:"occurrence-count-text";s:0:"";s:19:"custom-month-number";s:5:"First";s:16:"custom-month-day";s:1:"1";s:24:"custom-year-month-number";s:1:"1";s:21:"custom-year-month-day";s:1:"1";s:22:"recurrence-description";s:0:"";s:14:"EventStartDate";s:19:"2018-07-08 10:00:00";s:12:"EventEndDate";s:19:"2018-07-08 15:00:00";} [OrganizerID] => 2312 [Cost] => 1.00 ) ) [09] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [ID] => 2385 [post_author] => 35 [post_date] => 2017-09-08 09:32:48 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-09-08 09:32:48 [post_content] =>

A Guided Walk around Historic Hythe

Whether you are a history buff or just enjoy a gentle stroll around interesting places, the Hythe town walk is for you. During Festival week (and, indeed, throughout the summer months!) our team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides will both walk and talk you around our town taking in all the sights: starting at the Town Hall our guides will delight you with stories of local events and people, our relationship with France over the years and the history of the Cinque Ports. Heading out through the undercroft with its ‘interesting’ inscription you pass many fascinating and historic buildings, several with their own unique features, including the King’s Head, St John’s Almshouses, Oaklands and many more.   You will stroll along the towpath of the Royal Military Canal – built to keep Napoleon at bay but not completed until 1809 when the threat of invasion was long past – then through the High Street and up to the eleventh century church of St Leonard with its famous ossuary – one of only two in the UK. With over 1,000 years of history, Hythe is truly charming – do join us. The Tuesday Fellowship meets throughout the year in the St Michael's Methodist Anglican Church Centre. A Speaker is organised and questions and discussion follow over a cup of tea. The Speaker on Tuesday 10 July will be Mike Umbers who writes and lectures on local historical topics. For his Talk 'Boney's Coming' he will show slides of the Royal Military Canal , the Martello Towers and Grand Redoubt, and the plan to flood Romney Marsh. As a former career soldier he will consider the efficacy of these, and Napoleon's chances of a successful Invasion. [post_title] => Tuesday Fellowship Illustrated Talk.
